Overview
If the thought of going to the dentist fills you with dread, perhaps sedation dentistry is for you. Sedation is a safe and trusted method to ease your fears and anxieties about your dental appointments, enabling you to have the treatment you may have been putting off for years.
What is sedation?
Intravenous sedation is a way of inducing a deep state of relaxation whilst still being able to communicate with your dentist. You rapidly feel care-free and often have little memory of the experience.
What does it involve?
A sedative drug called midazolam, is carefully introduced into your hand or arm and you feel relaxed and sleepy within minutes. As soon as you are comfortable your treatment can begin.
How will I feel during the sedation?
Within a minute or so you will begin to feel very relaxed, and your anxieties will drift away. You will still be awake and be able to communicate but will feel ‘unconcerned’ by your dental treatment.
Is it just for nervous people?
No, it can be very useful for long and uncomfortable treatments such as extractions or implants. It can also be very helpful for those who suffer with a sensitive gag reflex.
Who will treat me?
Your usual St.James dentist will provide the dental treatment. Dr Simi Robbins or Dr Christopher Marston will provide the sedation.
I’m interested, what shall I do next?
Discuss the possibility of sedation with your St.James dentist. If appropriate they can refer you for a free assessment or consultation.
What happens at the consultation?
Simi or Chris will discuss your treatment needs, along with your medical details and previous dental experiences. The entire procedure and your suitability for sedation will be discussed. Simi and Chris are both very approachable and sympathetic to your needs. They will be able to answer any questions or queries you may have.
Is there anything else I should know?
You will need an escort to remain in the building whilst you have your treatment. They will also need to accompany you home. For the rest of the day you should not drive, operate machinery, or look after children under any circumstances.
Advantages:
- Rapid onset and very controllable
- Predictable, reliable, and safe
- Creates a deep state of relaxation
- Often there is very little memory of the treatment
- Gag reflex is greatly reduced
How much does sedation cost?
All patients receive a free assessment before the consultation. The consultation costs £80 and the Sedation costs £200 (per hour). Consultation includes detailed discussion, full health check, treatment planning and full estimate. The cost of the dental treatment is not included.
