New Normal, New Smile, New You

12 October 2020

We are all experiencing new ways of living, whether it’s limiting our numbers in social gatherings or trying to think of new ways to adapt our businesses and daily lives throughout the ongoing situation.

As we adapt to the ‘new normal’, we may have more time to focus on ourselves and the things we have been putting off. Did you miss your routine appointment at the hairdressers or beauticians? Did you miss your routine dental or hygienist appointments? If so, please contact us at St. James Dental to book your missed appointments as soon as you can.

Are you working from home and spending more time on video conference calls? Are you choosing to catch up with family and friends via video link to keep each other safe? Have you looked at your smile and wondered how to improve it from the comfort of your own home?

Have you considered tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening is one of the easiest ways to enhance your looks. It is simple, affordable and safe. Many people say they feel years younger after having treatment, erasing the effects of ageing, coffee, red wine and cigarettes. It is completely non-invasive and offers the biggest transformation for your smile. At St.James Dental we use Enlighten®whitening, and the difference is in the results. Follow your dentist’s guidance and your teeth will whiten beyond any other whitening system available on the market.

Spending more time at home could be your perfect opportunity to whiten your teeth and improve your smile for when you next meet up with work colleagues, friends and family.

Do teeth become darker with age?

Tooth colour is genetically determined just like hair colour, though unlike hair, teeth tend to darken naturally with age. Over time, teeth can become superficially stained by coffee, red wine and tobacco, which is generally easier to remove. Internal staining can be more difficult to remove, and may develop as a result of illness, certain medication or when the nerve ‘dies’.

Tooth grinding, also known as bruxism, can damage and weaken the enamel, making the teeth appear yellow and brittle. However your lifestyle may have affected your teeth, seeing your teeth become damaged and discoloured can be disheartening, and make you reluctant to smile.

If you feel embarrassed about the colour of your teeth, or simply want them to look whiter and brighter, then teeth whitening might be the answer.

How does whitening work?

Once we have checked the health of your teeth and gums, we take impressions (moulds) of your teeth. Your treatment will involve 2 weeks of home whitening, followed by a 40 minute in-surgery power whitening session to help your teeth reach their maximum whiteness.

You will be given Enlighten® whitening trays. These specially designed custom-made trays are what makes the Enlighten® system so predictable, reliable and successful. Enlighten® whitening works by increasing the permeability of your teeth to oxygen, which helps to break down stain molecules within the enamel.

Will it be painful?

You may get some sensitivity during treatment. You will be given Enlighten® desensitising swabs to take home with you, which will instantly relieve any sensitivity you have. You will also be given Enlighten® tooth serum toothpaste, a hydroxyapatite and fluoride-based sensitivity toothpaste providing unrivalled nourishment and comfort for your teeth.

How white will my teeth get?

Enlighten® can whiten up to 16 shades! Results vary but if used correctly, all teeth will whiten dramatically.

Will they look too white?

No, natural teeth rarely look too white. Teeth generally only look artificial when they are made from artificial materials such as porcelain or acrylic.

Will my crowns, veneers or white fillings change colour?

No, but you may choose to have them replaced afterwards if they no longer match the colour of your teeth.

How will I keep my teeth white afterwards?

Maintaining your white smile has never been easier. We recommend topping up once per month depending on your lifestyle. You will be given one complimentary syringe of top-up whitening gel as part of your treatment. Additional syringes are available from reception. You will also be given Enlighten® evo-white toothpaste, a revolutionary toothpaste with novel surfactant technology that inhibits both stain and plaque development. It helps to break down stains using enzymes instead of harsh abrasives so it’s completely safe to your enamel.

Is tooth whitening safe?

Absolutely, the materials used in Enlighten® whitening have been used in dentistry for over 100 years.

What about other products available online?

Tooth whitening products available online are unlicensed and unregulated. They can cause temporary or permanent damage to your teeth and gums. All tooth whitening treatments must be performed by a regulated dental professional, in fact, any person who offers tooth whitening without being regulated risks criminal prosecution by the General Dental Council.
